Historic Waimea Theatre

Nostalgic Historic Waimea Theatre

Nostalgic in its own right, the Historic Waimea Theatre is a place where you and your family can enjoy a movie in the quaint town of Waimea.  After watching the beautiful sunset at one of the westside beaches or after driving down from Waimea Canyon, stop by to relax and catch a flick.

Historic Waimea Theatre

Westernmost Theatre in the U.S.

A gem of a theatre, it was originally opened from 1938-1972 until closing its doors to become a storage facility.  After the landmark theatre’s exterior was destroyed by hurricane Iniki in 1992, it was leased by the West Kauai Main Street. The theatre was properly restored and reopened in 1999. Being the last single screen theatre on Kauai and westernmost theatre in the United States, the Historic Waimea Theatre features a big screen and state of the art sound system.  Besides movies, the theatre shows international films, hosts concerts, local performances, corporate functions, special events and private parties.

Facilities

The theatre has a concession area where you can purchase popcorn, drinks, candy and snacks.  The two rows of nice cushioned rattan seats are available if you come early enough to get these spots and the auditorium seating is quite spacious and comfortable.  If your keiki get a little anxious in the main auditorium, head out into the lobby for a few minutes where there is a large tv screen to watch the movie.

Alternative Option

The Waimea Theatre is usually not too crowded compared to the Lihue theatre (the only other theatre on the island).  The Lihue theatre gets the new movies first and the movies trickle down to the Waimea theatre a week or two after.  This provides families with children an opportunity to see the newest movies without paying an arm and leg.

Pricing

Movie prices are $8 Adults; $7 Students, Military, Seniors (55+); $6 Children (5-10 yrs old).  Movie times are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm; Sunday at 6:00 pm; Wednesday and Thursday at 7:00 pm.  Please make sure to call 808-338-2027 to see if a movie will be playing as sometimes movie schedules change to accommodate special events.

L.O.C.A.L. (Loving Our Community And Lifestyle) feeling

Watching a movie at the Historic Waimea Theatre has a great small town feel and is a great place to bring your family. Theater Manager Thomas Nizo and staff are very friendly and provide a ohana type atmosphere.  Sometimes before the previews start, you can catch a big game that is being televised.  Otherwise listen to the hawaiian music while a historic slideshow of Waimea’s past plays.

When we come to the theatre with our two boys we usually get a movie pass for two $30. This includes two general admissions, and includes a large popcorn, two medium drinks, two hot dogs and a choice of snack. We usually get a small popcorn and drink combo for the kids.
